Seborrheic Dermatitis: Causes, Symptoms & Management

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic skin condition that causes redness, flaky patches, and stubborn dandruff. It typically appears in oily areas of the body such as the scalp, face (especially around the nose and eyebrows), chest, and upper back.

Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis:

There is no single known cause of seborrheic dermatitis, but several contributing factors may include:

  1. Overgrowth of a yeast called Malassezia that naturally lives on the skin
  2. Excess sebum (oil) production
  3. Triggers such as stress, weather changes, or underlying health conditions

 Common Symptoms

  1. Flaky, greasy, or yellowish-white scales
  2. Red, irritated, or inflamed skin
  3. Persistent itching—particularly on the scalp

Treatment & Management
While seborrheic dermatitis isn’t fully curable, it can be effectively managed. A combination of medicated shampoos, gentle skincare routines, and trigger avoidance can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent frequent flare-ups.
